Item 2013 System Department Accomplishments(2014-01-10) Schuster, DavidItem Action items for new librarians(Texas Library Association, 2015) Whitmer, Susan; Cool, Christina; Mims, Amanda; Townsdin, SuzanneA librarian’s first year of professional work is full of expectations – both from the new librarian and the employer. Job responsibilities can range from serving as the LibGuides administrator to library instructor for first-year English composition classes. Library and information science schools prepare new librarians with theory. However, it is on-the-job training and the ability to adapt to an institution’s culture that determines successItem Back to the Future: Re-examining the Need for Shelf–Ready Processes in the E-Book Environment(2015) Martin, Susan; Ward, Pamela; Washington, BrittneyItem Breaking free of curricular confines: Seeking new opportunities to teach critical media literacy in the era of “fake news”(2018) Morris, AbigailThe recent rise in “fake news” has brought renewed attention to developing students’ critical thinking and media literacy skills. Librarians, as both experts in the pedagogy of information literacy and as curricular outsiders have an opportunity to develop creative programming that addresses these skills, and find spaces where autonomous teaching practices that produce life-long learners and informed citizens can be cultivated. Ideas on how to apply the Framework to media literacy education, create programming to extend instruction and outreach efforts across campus communities, and emerge as campus leaders in information/media literacy and critical thinking pedagogy will be discussed.Item Charleston Library Conference 2015 Poster Session(2015-11-23) Martin, SusanShelf-ready processing of print materials is a commonly available service from library book vendors, and many libraries outsource these services in order to help save staff time and costs, and to expedite the process. However, in the age where print monographs are increasingly replaced with e-books, do these services still make fiscal sense? In the Spring of 2015, the Libraries were looking to expand shelf-ready services to a second vendor, but before doing so opted to do a feasibility study to see if shelf-ready services were still needed and economical. This paper presents the findings of a two month study done at the Texas Woman’s University Libraries’ on the Libraries’ outsourced and in-house cataloging workflows. The study examined the amount of time it took to receive the materials after ordering, the various costs involved: shelf-ready fees and internal staff costs, as well as the numbers of print materials being purchased over the past three fiscal years.Item Collaborations and conversations: Establishing an open educational resources initiative at a small public university(2019) Zerangue, AmandaEstablishing an Open Educational Resources (OER) initiative can be challenging for any institution-- funding, staffing, and faculty buy-in may be roadblocks for the most inventive or ambitious of projects. While these overarching challenges are present within any higher education institution which strives to encourage faculty adoption of OER, there are unique issues relevant to such an initiative at a smaller public institution, particularly one which does not receive state or federal funding to incentivize adoption. Using Texas Woman’s University (TWU) as a case study, this community resource will explore these unique concerns by providing information, templates, and other documentation of the campus collaborations and conversations which occurred over the past year as a SPARC OER Lead Fellow, in support of our OER awareness campaign.Item Comic Books and Academia: One Library’s Participation in Free Comic Book Day(2014-07-25) Osborn, Allison; Wilson, JohnathanFor the first time ever, Texas Woman's University libraries participated in Free Comic Book Day, a nationwide event that promotes the reading and adoption of comic books and graphic novels. Being an academic library, it was important to relate the comic book day to a university environment, so a presentation was included about the merits of comic books in academia. Ideas for partnering with comic book shops, marketing, and displays will be including in the presentation.Item Conducting research on the college level(Texas Woman's University, 2014-05-22) Wilson, Johnathan; Maxwell, ConniePresentation done at the AISL conference.Item Data 101(2022) Ossom-Williamson, PeaceData can be found everywhere and in everything! In this workshop, learn about the role of data and how to make use of it. Our presenter will teach basic steps for getting started and ways of being accurate and inclusive in the use of data.Item Derechos posthumanos: Dimensiones de los mundos transhumanos(Universidad Complutense de Madrid, 2015) Evans, WoodyThere are at least three dimensions to rights. We may have and lack freedom to 1) be, 2) do, and 3) have. These dimensions reformulate Locke’s categories, and are further complicated by placing them within the context of domains such as natural or civil rights. Here the question of the origins of rights is not addressed, but issues concerning how we may contextualize them are discussed. Within the framework developed, this paper makes use of Actor-Network Theory and Enlightenment values to examine the multidimensionality and appropriateness of animal rights and human rights for posthumans. The core position here is that rights may be universal and constant, but they can only be accessed within a matrix of relative cultural dimensions. This will be true for posthumans, and their rights will be relative to human rights and dependent on human and posthuman responsibilities.Item Desk Stretches with Digital Strategies(2022-09-16) Whitmer, SusanThe 2022-2023 TWU Libraries book-in-common is Dr. Zoe Shaw's A Year of Self-Care: Daily Practices and Inspiration for Caring for Yourself. Librarian and chair yoga teacher, Susan Whitmer, is inspired by the book and offers a short stretch routine called Three Movements of the Spine.Item Developing and implementing a departmental award for textbook savings at Texas Woman’s University(SPARC (Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition), 2019-05-13) Zerangue, AmandaAs a smaller, public, higher education institution with extremely limited resources, the drivers for OER adoption on the TWU campus are threefold-- grass-root initiatives, strategic campus partnerships, and a large helping of librarian tenacity. Named the H.E.A.R.T. Initiative (Helping Education with Alternate Resources and Textbooks) in a nod towards the TWU motto as a “campus with a heart,” this project began with the goals of developing a departmental award for textbook savings in order to improve awareness of Open Educational Resources (OER), forming a collaboration with campus partners to develop programming and communicate with appropriate campus leaders regarding the award, and developing a marketing campaign in order to spread awareness of the award. In the span of one year, what began as an exploratory conversation transformed into a model recognized and supported at the highest level of campus administration.Item Ebooks: Are your students getting a return on your investment(Texas Woman's University, 2014-04-25) Reed, Kristine; Maxwell, ConnieItem Exploring open educational resources at TWU: Textbook affordability and accessibility(2018) Zerangue, AmandaThis presentation was given at TWU's 13th Annual Teaching and Learning Symposium.Item Five years of first years: Success, challenges, and some solutions for teaching information literacy(Texas Library Association, 2020) Whitmer, SusanThis article is based on five years of data collected from information literacy sessions given to English 1023 Composition II classes. The one-hour information literacy sessions were taught by the author, Susan Whitmer. Each session included information on how to use the TWU Libraries catalog and databases, how to evaluate information, how to ethically use information to avoid plagiarism, and citation theory.Item Five years of first-year composition: A librarian reflects(2019) Whitmer, SusanThis presentation is a reflection of an instruction librarian’s first five years of teaching one-shot information literacy classes to First-Year Composition (FYC) courses in higher education. It is critical for the academic success of first-year students to develop information literacy skills: how to locate quality information, how to evaluate information, and how to ethically use information. New instruction librarians, who may be knowledgeable about information literacy, may not have the teaching skills to share this information. Instruction librarians are generally given only a one-hour, one-shot library class in a semester-long composition course to teach information literacy skills. Based on five years of trial and error teaching information literacy to FYC students, the author has created a flexible program that engages students, faculty, and librarians. In addition to exploring challenges and solutions of teaching information literacy to FYC, the author provides information on how to collect assessment data by creating a Learning Outcomes Project based on Kohl and Wilson's Rubric to measure the quality of cited references. The value of information literacy instruction is difficult to measure. However, the goal of this paper is to prove that information literacy instruction is intimately connected to student success as measured by retention, GPA, and graduation.Item Foundations of Effective Digital Collaboration Skills(2022-07-28) DeForest, LeaCollaborating with colleagues online can be just as easy, fun, and productive as in-person, and you can learn to improve your digital collaboration skills through this hands-on virtual workshop.
