Item Inpatient stroke self-management programs impact on self-efficacy, participation, and health and wellness post-discharge: A PRISMA Review Search Strategies(2021) Wheeler, Carolyn; Neville, Marsha; Cox, Elaine; Osborne, CandiceSystematic Review Search StrategyItem Go Move: A Case Study on Goal-Directed Training & Home Programs for Children with Unilateral Cerebral Palsy(2024) Trahan, MadisonChildren diagnosed with unilateral cerebral palsy (UCP) encounter obstacles in performing daily tasks due to asymmetrical impairments, resulting in compensatory strategies, learned nonuse, and developmental disregard. To enhance and sustain functional abilities, consistent engagement in meaningful motor-based activities is essential (Shierk et al., 2024). Unfortunately, many children with cerebral palsy lack access to requisite motor-based rehabilitation services, underscoring the importance of exploring goal-directed training and home programs as viable alternatives. Empirical evidence supports the efficacy of these approaches in enhancing function, parental contentment, and movement quality among youth with cerebral palsy (Novak et al., 2009). However, despite high quality research demonstrating their effectiveness, a disparity persists between evidence and the actual implementation of best practices. Addressing this gap, GO Move (Goal-oriented Movement Opportunities in a Visual Environment), a newly developed mobile website, offers guidance on goal setting, activity selection, and exercise tracking within home settings, specifically targeting motor function improvement in children with UCP. Accessible in diverse cultural and linguistic contexts, GO Move has the potential to augment rehabilitation quality, broaden access to care, and enhance clinical practice by furnishing evidence-based intervention to individuals with UCP and their care providers. The capstone student conducted a case study of the protocol to begin examining the feasibility and acceptability of the Go Move mobile website.Item Perception of Work or Community Participation by Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities following Planning for Autism Curriculum Implementation(2024) Benefield, MorganThis capstone experience was completed to examine the effects of a program targeting self-awareness, self-care, and self-advocacy on the perception of work or community participation activities by adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Historically minority groups, including those with IDD have faced disparities within the community and workplace. Adults with IDD continue to display decreased employment and community participation activities compared to their neurotypical counterparts. The purpose of the program explored was to continue to decrease the disparities displayed by the target population and support their community and employment endeavors following their high school education. The program consisted of a 6-week program with 8 participants, implementing curriculum material covering self-awareness, self-care, and self-advocacy. Outcome measures were utilized to assess the perceived effects of the program by the participants. The outcome measures indicated improvements in their perceptions of community and work participation activities. Further research is needed to assess the long term effects of the program.Item The Ties Between Mental Health and Refugee Children(2024) Musa, BurujMy project focus is on middle-school aged refugee children and occupation-based mental health interventions, with an emphasis on cultural awareness, to provide a healthy outlet for emotional regulation and combat the risk of mental illness development in this population.Item Smart Start: A School Readiness Program for Children with Unilateral Cerebral Palsy(2024) Arellano, BrianaSmart Start is an intensive therapeutic program created to address school readiness skills for children with cerebral palsy. Smart Start focuses on functional and cognitive domains as a therapeutic approach to provide interventions in areas of development that children with CP may be behind in secondary to their diagnosis. Goals of the capstone project include creating a manual for the program, conducting pre- and post- assessments for participants, provide caregivers with a descriptive analysis of the skills their child accomplished during the program, and to write/present scholarly work.Item Improving Confidence And Content Retention With Online And In Person Learning Modules To Promote Fieldwork Success(2024) Stewart, NathanThis presentation examines a capstone project designed to improve confidence and content retention for graduate therapy students preparing for Fieldwork 2 (FW2). By integrating online learning modules with in-person lab reviews, the project addresses challenges such as limited experiential learning opportunities and low confidence levels in clinical practice. The approach, rooted in David Kolb's principles of experiential learning, provides students with practical opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge. Pretest and post-test assessments indicate improvements in students' confidence and understanding of fieldwork concepts.Item Using Video-Based Support to Improve Vocational Skills in Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disability at Bridges Training Foundation(2024) Jegede, EsosaA 6-week video-based support program was conducted at Bridges Training Foundation in Midlothian, Texas, to improve vocational skills among its clientele. Utilizing video-based support strategies such as video modeling and prompting is an effective EBP to establish, promote, restore, or maintain vocational skills in adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disability.Item Encouraging Home Health Occupational Therapy Practitioners to Promote Sustainable Interventions for the Adult Population(2024) Blanton, EmilyData was collected from home health occupational therapists through an online questionnaire created by the capstone student. The survey asked questions regarding OTPs current understanding of sustainability, current knowledge regarding sustainable health care, and if/how they consider the environment when selecting interventions. Data collected was formatted into a downloadable and printable PDF version to ease accessibility. The capstone student created a Google Slides presentation for practitioners, an online learning module with quizzes, videos, voice over audio, and interactive activities. Content includes what sustainability is, OT’s scope of practice, how sustainability fits within the scope of practice, OT models, theories, frameworks, and interventions centered on sustainability and either focus on improving the environment or decreasing their impact. The survey resulted in identifying strengths in knowledge and areas for improvement that, in turn, informed the online learning module in that more attention was given to lesser-known topics. Learners have the option to turn on “live captions” using Google Chrome and picture descriptions were provided where necessary. Finally, the capstone student created a clinical reasoning pocket guide that includes definitions of environmental and sustainability reasoning and the opportunity for practitioners to fill in their own intervention ideas and how to implement the terms. A video is available for practitioners to view how to utilize the guide.Item The Impact of Aquatic Therapy on Individuals with Parkinson's Disease(2024) Campbell, JaclynThe chosen focus area of study was program development to create and implement a fall prevention aquatic therapy program for individuals with Parkinson’s disease. The purpose of the capstone project was to establish a sustainable aquatic therapy program to improve balance and decrease fall prevalence in older adults in the greater Bryan community. Sessions commenced once weekly on Saturdays for 60 minutes and were held in the indoor pool at Advance Physical Therapy in Bryan, Texas. A needs assessment was performed and determined that a fall prevention program for older adults, specifically older adults with Parkinson’s disease, would be beneficial. LSVT BIG moves were incorporated to target fall prevention for these individuals. Outcomes measured included balance and rate of falls pre and post intervention. Tests and measures included the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, interviews, and surveys. The ultimate goal of the program was to achieve a decrease in the rate of falls as reported by individual participants of the program.Item Occupational Therapy Interventions for Patients with Disorders of Consciousness (DOC)(2024) Furl, JadeThere is a strong need to increase occupational therapists' (OTs) knowledge on Disorders of Consciousness (DOC) and for OTs to understand how to implement effective treatments for this population to increase their overall awareness and improve functional outcomes. There is also a need for more OTs to be involved in DOC research. My capstone project focused on attainment of research skills and specialized clinical practice skills evaluating and treating patients with DOC and brain injuries in the neurological inpatient rehabilitation setting. A case study was also developed following a patient with DOC on our caseload who sustained an anoxic brain injury. The focus area of the case study was spasticity management and its impact on functional outcomes and overall awareness in patients with DOC.Item Wellness Education Program Effects on Cultural Adaptation for Refugees in France(2024) Webb, JoshuaThe capstone project entailed the development of a wellness education program that focused on educating refugees on eight aspects of wellness (cognitive, emotional, physical, spiritual, occupational, financial, environmental, and social) while seeking to engage in mutual cultural exchange. The program was designed to offer a four-part video series consisting of brief instruction on each aspect of wellness and providing practical tips for incorporating them into daily activities. Additionally, the program included a discussion guide to facilitate group interaction in relation to the topics covered in the videos. The program was offered at a basic French level to encourage participants to engage in conversation as a way to practice and enhance their language skills.Item GO Move: A Cerebral Palsy Case Study on Goal-Directed Training & Home Program(2024) Habeeb, YoustinaCerebral Palsy (CP) is a prevalent lifelong motor disorder, particularly affecting children, affecting consistent engagement in meaningful motor activities to maintain and enhance function (Accardo, 2008). Upon evaluation of different interventions, we decided to review GO Move. Despite the established effectiveness of goal-directed training and home-based programs in improving functionality, parental satisfaction, and motor skills among youth with CP (Novak et al., 2009), there exists a significant gap between research evidence and practical implementation by therapists and individuals with CP. This gap is further widened by limited access to literature for clinicians and barriers to therapy services for individuals with CP. The absence of a systematic, accessible mechanism for implementing evidence-based interventions in home settings for individuals with unilateral CP exacerbates delays in translating evidence into practice, thereby creating unnecessary disability burdens. As part of the capstone experience, we conducted the implementation of the feasibility study to assess the effectiveness and the acceptability of this mobile website.Item Smart Start: A Case Series(2024) Kirby, EmilyThe Smart Start program is a feasibility study that was developed to identify and intervene in affected areas of school readiness for preschool children with unilateral cerebral palsy with the use of goal-directed training. The Smart Start program was run over 8 weeks for 64 total hours of intensive intervention in school readiness domains. This capstone project details a case series from the first three program participants with preliminary data and findings.Item Adaptive Dance: Vital Components of adaptive dance programs for children with disabilities(2024) Haut, TaylorThrough an extensive literature review, I created an adaptive dance protocol that could be used for children with disabilities.
