| dc.description.abstract | The purpose of the study was to determine the difference between the chemotherapy knowledge score obtained following the chemotherapy education and prior to the third cycle of chemotherapy for first time chemotherapy recipients. Data were collected on 32 participants and nine variables, which included age, gender, education level, cancer diagnosis, purpose of treatment, drug and side effect knowledge, frequency of phone calls to the doctor, and the usefulness of educational information. A comparison of the two chemotherapy knowledge scores was determined using a t-test, which indicated no statistical difference in the scores. Utilizing Pearson r, no correlation was noted between the frequency of phone calls to the doctor and the participant's knowledge score. Nearly half of the participants were not aware of their treatment's purpose. Most of the patients could recall the distressing side effects such as nausea, however, less than 30% could recall the side effects, infection and bleeding. | en_US |
