dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this study was to determine the extent of vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency in a cohort of glycogen storage disease patients. In addition, the level of vitamin D supplementation required to increase serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] was assessed. Data was obtained via a retrospective chart review of GSD patients followed by the Department of Pediatrics Medical Genetics from the McGovern Medical School in Houston. GSD patients had significantly lower levels of serum 25(OH)D concentrations (p>0.000; CI 95%) compared to recommended levels. GSD patients were at increased risk of inadequate vitamin D status based on serum 25(OH)D levels with 48% deficient and 40% insufficient. Finally, findings indicated that vitamin D supplementation above the normal recommended level of 400 - 1000 IU/day was required to raise serum 25(OH)D concentrations to desirable levels.
