dc.description.abstract | Purpose: The purpose of the study was to determine if a competitive environment, without prior knowledge of competing, would increase an athlete’s performance. Methods: Eighteen female athletes were analyzed. Each participant performed a VO2max test and 3 trials (familiarization, control, competition). The competition consisted of 2 matched participants running at the same time; matched within a VO2max of 5 ml/kg/min. Participants were blinded to the purpose, until the study was completed. Results: A significant difference was found in overall distance (CT: 3.063 ± 0.445 vs. COMP: 3.274 ± 0.437 km p=.017). There were no significant differences in HR (CT: 178.3 ± 19.6 vs. 183.9 ± 14.3, p=.134) or RPE (CT: 14.4 ± 2.7 vs. COMP: 14.4 ± 1.5, p=.999). Discussion: The COMP didn’t affect RPE or HR; however, distance was significantly increased. This indicates that if female athletes are presented with a competitive environment, the athletes will compete without instruction. | en_US |
