Item Caregiver support for the rural homebound elderly at risk for family violence(1986-12) Dean, Malessa; Beard, Margaret; Behning, Irene; Fomby, BettyThe purpose of this investigation was to identify empirical indicators of abuse in the homebound elderly, and to test the efficacy of a caregiver support program in alleviating stress in the primary caregiver of the homebound elderly. Sixty subjects were assigned to experimental and control groups; N = 15 pairs in each group. The composition of each group included 15 caregivers and 15 elderly persons. Both the experimental and control groups were given a pretest stress scale and a quality of care scale at home. This procedure was repeated for the experimental and control posttest following a caregiver support program. The test instruments used were the Lazarus Hassles Scale and the Dean Quality of Care Scale for the Homebound Elderly. The data showed statistical significance between caregiver stress and quality of care (abuse) for the homebound elderly. Further findings indicated an association between physical indicators and social indicators of abuse and caregiver stress. In addition, there was a difference in quality of care of those elderly persons whose caregivers attended the caregiver support program and those who did not.
