These studies examined: women, crime, and their relationship to punitiveness. For the purpose of this research, the term “punitiveness” refers to the likelihood of punishment or the infliction of a punishment. This research examines comparative studies from: England, Wales, Finland, Georgia, Australia, Turkey, and America. Using these comparative studiesI attempt to examine similarities and differences in patterns of punitiveness towards female offenders, address the cross national differences in punitiveness and gender, and discuss some of the reasoning behind different types of sentencing given to women versus men.
