The problem of this study was to determine if, when controlling for trait anxiety levels, there is a difference in state anxiety levels in primigravidas who have delivered in the traditional delivery environment and primigravidas who have delivered in the birthing rooms. The theory utilized for this study was Spielberger's (1966) and Spielberger, Gorsuch, Lushene, Vagg, and Jacobs' (1970) theory of anxiety. The research design utilized in the study was an ex post facto, comparative study. The sample consisted of 34 primigravidas who met the study's criteria. A one-directional research hypothesis was used for the study and the statistical test used for analysis of data was the analysis of covariance test. Findings of the study revealed a slightly higher level of state anxiety in the traditional delivery group prior to delivery. This group also had a higher T-Anxiety mean score. When the scores were adjusted to control for differences in trait anxiety, the resulting means were not significantly different.en_US
