Assessment of energy requirements in patients diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma

dc.description.abstractPatients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are at an increased risk for malnutrition and mortality. However, nutrition recommendations for energy needs in this population are limited. Therefore, this study aimed to measure resting energy expenditure (mREE) among adults diagnosed with HCC and compare to predicted resting energy expenditure (pREE) derived from predictive equations (Harris Benedict and Mifflin St. Jeor). Indirect calorimetry and dual x-ray absorptiometry were used to assess the mREE and body composition. Seven adult males were included for analysis. Mean ± sd age and BMI was 67 ± 7y and 30 ± 5.3 kg/m2, respectively. Measured REE (1801 ± 339 kcal/d) was not significantly different than pREE using the Harris Benedict equation (1805 ± 263 kcal/d; p = .96) and Mifflin St. Jeor equation (1726 ± 198 kcal/d; p = .41). These results indicate that energy needs in this sample are comparable to predicted needs in otherwise healthy adults.
