In searching out the historical background for Edmond Rostand's play, Cyrano de Bergerac, the writer has sought to make a study which will be of interest and aid to students and teachers of drama and French literature. It is hoped that the study will prove as inspirational to the reader as it has been to the author. The Brian Hooker translation of Cyrano de Bergerac was used throughout the thesis, since more than any other translation it seems in this writer's opinion to catch the spirits of the original and retain its beautiful and expressive poetry. Of particular aid in the preparation of this thesis was Richard Aldington's resume of the life of Cyrano, found in the introduction to his translation of Cyrano's Voyages to the Moon and the Sun.
