Abstract

Gemini surfactants have received some interest for their potential applications as anti bacterials,anti-corrosives, agents for oil spill remediation and gen delivery systems. Thus, it is important tounderstand the physical properties of these molecules. In this study we investigated a series of12-n-12 Gemini surfactants (where n = 2, 3 or 4) using isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC),conductivity, refractivity and dynamic light scattering (DLS) determinations. Thus, we have determined the enthalpy of micellization ( H mic ), the critical micelle concentration (cmc), and thehydrodynamic radii of the micelles formed by these surfactants at concentrations above the cmc. In addition, we have investigated the interactions of these surfactants with simple lawn mower oil to evaluate their potential for oil spill remediation. (Faculty Sponsor: Dr. Richard Sheardy)
