Abstract

Middle school refugee youth often face challenges including trauma, stress, and depression. To help increase their resilience and well-being, an occupational therapy-based life skills program was developed and implemented at a nonprofit organization during an after-school program over the course of seven weeks. A doctoral occupational therapy student led this program that consisted of seven topics: conflict resolution, connecting with others, safety awareness, money management, problem-solving, emotional regulation, and first aid. The program was implemented with seven middle schoolers between the ages of 11-14 years at For The Nations Refugee Outreach in Garland, TX. Results indicated an increase in resilience and well-being from pre- to post-assessment with statistically significant differences. This capstone project demonstrated the positive impact of an occupational therapy program within this population.
