Abstract

The purpose of my study is to analyze and compare various views on Milton's Eve as they relate to Eve's seductiveness, slyness, submissiveness, and freedom in Paradise Lost. In order to accomplish this goal, I have compiled multiple sources from various eras by male and female authors. In the first two chapters I examine scholarship from literary magazines and journals. Chapters three and four focus on two works on Eve, Feminist Milton by Joseph Wittreich and Milton's Eve by Linda McColley. The final chapter of the thesis concludes with a summary of these four aspects of Eve's character and its effect on Milton's readers.
