dc.description.abstract | The overall aim of this study was to give a clearer understanding of the relationship between parental support and young adults’ experiences in navigating the transition from high school to college. Bronfenbrenner’s Bioecological Theory served as the guiding compass to explore and better understand the relationship between family support and young adults’ experiences. One research question was developed for this study: What is the relationship between parent support and young adults’ experiences in transitioning from high school to college? Ten young adults completed a demographic questionnaire and a semi-structured interview that was conducted remotely, via Zoom. Bracketing and analyst triangulation were used to help contribute to trustworthiness of the data. The analysis of the interviews revealed the following four themes: (1) Parents providing emotional support contributed to the experiences of the transition from high school to college for young adults (2) Parents providing financial support contributed to the experiences of the transition from high school to college for young adults, (3) Parents providing academic support contributed to the experiences of the transition from high school to college for young adults, and (4) Parents providing informational support contributed to the experiences of the transition from high school to college for young adults. There were also several subthemes that were realized. Results of the study were compared to the existing literature and conclusions were drawn. Study strengths, limitations, implications, recommendations for practice, and recommendations for future research were presented. | |
