An experimental study was conducted to investigate two methods of practicing venipuncture and their effects on state anxiety and performance level of nursing students when performing a venipuncture on a client for the first time. The theoretical framework was based on Spielberger's (1966) state-trait anxiety theory. The sample consisted of 18 senior nursing students, randomly assigned to two groups. One group practiced veni-puncture on an IV arm. The other group practiced venipuncture on a peer (another student). State anxiety scores were determined by Spielberger's State-Trait Anxiety Inventory before practicing venipuncture and before performing a venipuncture on a client for the first time. A researcher-developed venipuncture performance tool was utilized to assess the performance scores. Results showed no significant difference in the state anxiety level and performance scores between the two groups at the .05 level prior to the venipuncture on a client.
