Asthma management in elementary public schools

This study examined possible relationships between participation in school-based asthma educational programs by elementary school personnel and their levels of asthma knowledge and skills. Two hundred and thirty-six school nurses, teachers, and coaches employed by a school district in northern Texas participated. The Asthma Questionnaire was administered in October 1996. The results were measured using ANOV A statistical analysis. No significant differences were found in asthma management knowledge and skill levels between those with and those without participation in an asthma educational program. There was a significant difference identified between the knowledge levels of school nurses, teachers, and coaches. Results showed a lack of awareness and participation in school-based asthma educational programs. The source of asthma knowledge reported was nonspecific and general. Estimates by the respondents of the number of students with asthma varied greatly within school campuses. Future studies are needed to determine the quality and consistency of asthma programs.
