Abstract
The problem of the study was to describe nurses' level of knowledge of law concerning clinical nursing practice. Thirty-eight registered nurses, working at least 20 hours per week in the nursing field, served as a convenience sample. The subjects answered a demographic questionnaire as well as a questionnaire titled "Clinical Nursing and the Law." Contrary to what the literature review suggests, subjects had some knowledge of nursing accountability and the law. Knowledge level did not vary with highest level of nursing education, number of years since the last degree earned, number of years actively employed in nursing, attendance in a legal class or inservice , and involvement in a legal lawsuit or settlement. Most subjects did not have a course in nursing law , but did report attending inservice education courses.
