Clinical preceptor and student perceptions of the impact of cultural and linguistic differences

ABSTRACT LINDA TREITLER CLINICAL PRECEPTOR AND STUDENT PERCEPTIONS OF THE IMPACT OF CULTURAL AND LINGUISTIC DIFFERENCES AUGUST 2020 The purpose of this study was to explore perceptions of staff nurse preceptors and culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) nursing students about the impact of cultural and linguistic diversity on their experiences when working together during clinical practicum. Perceived problems as well as coping methods used by nurses and students during their clinical experiences provide insights on strategies that may enhance the clinical experience for CALD students and preceptorship satisfaction for nurses. The qualitative descriptive methodology was used to interview participants. Recruitment was purposive and snowball, and participant nurses and students self-selected. Thematic analysis was used to identify themes and subthemes for nurses and students as separate groups, then for the entire cohort. Three major themes emerged from this study: a) need for additional time, b) understanding expectations of each other through communication barriers, and c) building relationships. The need for additional time applied to nurse preceptors who need more time to provide care to their patients while teaching CALD students. The need for additional time for students applies to the time it takes them to understand spoken English, and to read and write English medical language in the clinical setting. Understanding expectations is important for students and preceptors to work together, but also applies to understanding expectations of the preceptorship model and the nursing school procedures. Building relationships refers to students and preceptors preferring to work together over time, because as they are more comfortable with each other, and trust develops, students are able to accomplish more in skills and knowledge attainment. Building relationships also applies to the need for good and thorough communication between agencies and universities who employ the preceptorship model for clinical training for nursing students. The implications for the nursing profession involve improving the workplace to elevate the status and working conditions for nurse preceptors. The implications for nursing education involve adding more medical language practice to the didactic as well as skills and simulation experiences for CALD students.
